Teachers of Multilingual Learners! This course is for you;) It will help you with some of the foundations and strategies for making a language-rich classroom, which will ultimately help your students grow their proficiency levels. You will feel confident in teaching language at the word, sentence, and discourse levels through different tasks laid out in the course.
As teachers of Multilingual Learners, aka English Learners, we...
May not be clear on how to bridge language and content together with language objectives.
Might need some extra support with strategies and tasks for our students at the word, sentence, and discourse levels of language so they can grow!
May need guidance in understanding what words or grammar and sentence structures to pull out to teach.
Look for ideas to keep our language-learning authentic for our students.
Need support sometimes in knowing how to support our content teachers in the building.
There is a way to feel confident in your strategies for a language-rich classroom. My EL Mentor: Creating a Language-Rich Classroom will help you with some of the ESL teaching basics and will strengthen and develop your teaching practice.
As a new teacher in 2010, I was thrown into a public high school that had a bad reputation. I had no idea what I was doing. None. I wasn't even shown how to access the curriculum, had no books, no supplies. It was in short, a nightmare. I was supposed to have a mentor but I never met this person the whole year. That's why I am passionate about helping other teachers, new or not.
Now, I am an instructional coach that helps teachers and other coaches through coaching cycles to help develop their practice and support them in any way I can. That's why I created this course- to give other teachers a solid foundation on ESL teaching strategies so they can take all of the guesswork out of wondering what recommended strategies look like for teaching their students. It took me years to get to this point! But I'm sharing with you how to get off to a great start.
